Basic Tutorial On How To Write A Narrative Essay About Yourself

The narrative essay is a common assignment you will see throughout your academic life. It’s basically a storytelling assignment in which you write about something from your life that makes a connection with some theme or subject being discussed in class. In a broader view it’s writing about yourself and here is a basic tutorial showing you how to do just that.

  • Select a Focused Topic
  • Start by selecting a topic that genuinely interests you about your life and relates to something you can connect others with. Don’t come up with broad ideas, your essay can focus on just a single memory or event. Just be sure you can discuss it at length without running out of anything to say.

  • Brainstorm Some Ideas
  • After choosing a topic you can start to brainstorm ideas of exactly what it is you would like to say in your narrative essay. Consider areas in which you can provide a lot of details to bring the reader into your world momentarily. Try to use all of the senses in your writing: use sights, sounds, smells and anything else that paints a vivid picture.

  • Create an Essay Outline
  • Take your notes from the brainstorm session and arrange them into an outline. You aren’t going to be able to discuss everything thing there is to know about you, so only use the three best examples that effectively gets your point across most efficiently.

  • Write the First Draft
  • Now start writing! It’s as simple as that. Don’t worry about making mistakes or breaking your momentum to correct them. Write quickly and efficiently. Get all of your thoughts down in one place and let your creative mind take over. Don’t hold back as your best ideas usually come when you remove all filters.

  • Revise the First Draft
  • Set your assignment aside for a few days before coming back to it with a fresh perspective. Doing this will allow you to revise more effectively, finding a number of places where you can improve the work by adding, removing, or rearranging content.

  • Edit and Proofread
  • The final step towards writing a great narrative essay about yourself is editing and proofreading. Be sure you do this at multiple levels so that you don’t miss anything. Start at the paper level then proceed to the paragraph level and finish at the sentence level. Remember to double check your work at the end to ensure you haven’t missed any details.
