Tiger Woods’ Golf Career


Born Eldrick Tont Woods, Tiger Woods is an American professional golfer who came to reckoning in a record breaking performance in 1997 when he won his first masters, a year after he turned a professional golfer. Tiger Woods was born on December 30, 1975 to an African American father and a Thai mother. His father nicknamed him "Tiger" in honour of his friend who was also a soldier like him in the US Army.

His Golf Career

Tiger Woods turned professional golfer in 1996 and went on to win his first major masters at Augusta, USA, at a record age of 21 in 1997 and also reached world number one in June of the same year. Tiger Woods remain the youngest person ever to win a major and also the first black American to do so.

Tiger Woods has spent the longest number of weeks on the number one spot. From 1999 - 2014 he spent a number of 264 weeks as number one and another 281 weeks from 2005 - 2010, no other golfer has stayed on top for that long.

As a professional golfer, Tiger Woods have broken many records, set many records and still hoping to break a few more records if only he can get back to his former form. Tiger Woods has won the PGA player of the year for a record eleven times and the Byron Nelson award for a record eight times. Tiger Woods has more career major wins and PGA tour wins than any other golfer still playing.

Not only is Tiger Woods good at playing golf and smashing records and setting new records, he is also good at stacking the money. When he turned a professional golfer in August 1996, he immediately signed mouth-watering deals with three companies including Nike. Just as Tiger Woods dominated the golf ratings so he also dominated the money ratings. At a point, he was the highest earning athletes in the world.

In 2009, Tiger Woods experienced a dip in form because of marital issues and his admittance to marriage infidelities. Subsequently, he and his wife went through a divorce and Woods had a tough time picking up his form. But 2013 was a good year for Tiger Woods as he won four titles including the players’ championship in May, 2013.
